Dhaka South City Juba League’s expelled president Ismail Chowdhury Samrat was taken back to the Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj on Saturday after he was treated at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases in the capital.
Meanwhile, Dhaka North City councillor and former general secretary of Mohammadpur unit Awami League, Habibur Rahman Mizan, who was arrested from Sreemangal of Moulvibazar on Friday, was placed on a 7-day remand for interrogation by a Dhaka court on Saturday.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Nivana Khayer Jessy ordered the remand after the investigation officer, CID inspector Gias Uddin, produced him before the court and sought a 10-day remand.
The Rapid Action Battalion arrested the Dhaka north city ward 32 councillor as part of the ongoing drive against the casinos.
Hours after his arrest the elite force personnel brought him to Dhaka and conducted a search operation at his residence on Aurangzeb Road in Mohammadpur on Friday afternoon.
During the raid they seized cheques for Tk 6 crore 77 lakh, Tk 1 crore in fixed deposit receipts and Tk 2 lakh in cash from his house.
He has been implicated in two cases, one on money laundering and the other on illegal arms possession.
Samrat had been admitted to the NICVD on October 10 after he complained chest pain.
‘He was released on the recommendation of the medical board formed for his treatment,’ NICVD director Afzalur Rahman told New Age on Saturday afternoon.
‘He is quite fine now,’ he added.
DCJ senior superintendent Iqbal Kabir said that Samrat was taken back to the jail after the doctors confirmed that he was now fine.
RAB arrested Samrat and his associate Enamul Haque Arman, vice-president of Dhaka South City Juba League, from Chauddagram, Cumilla, on October 6. (NA)
