Russian court sentenced a former US Marine named Paul Whelan to 16 years who was convicted of espionage by a court in Moscow on Monday.
Paul Whelan is an Irish and British citizen by birth. He has Canadian citizenship. He later became a US citizen. He was arrested in December 2018 while staying at a hotel in Moscow. He was accused of being involved in spying.
He has been held in Moscow’s Lefortovo prison since then. Paul Whelan’s lawyer, Vladimir Zherebenkov, had previously said that Paul Whelan had unknowingly handed over a flash drive containing Russia’s ‘top-secret’ state information.
