The flood situation worsened drastically in Assam, the northeastern Indian state. At least 50 people have been killed in ongoing floods in the state with six more dies in the past 24 hours. Besides, several thousand villages have been submerged underwater which has affected more than 20 lakh people.
State officials said on Tuesday that large areas of the Kaziranga Sanctuary had been submerged. At least 51 animals died and 102 animals have been relocated. A few tigers and rhinos have moved to nearby villages. Many roads and houses have been submerged into the water in different parts of the state. Authorities have set up 460 relief camps to provide shelter to flood victims. More than 60,000 people have taken shelter in these.
In Assam, meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Mrinal Saikia is seen in a video rescuing women and children by removing mud from the water. Mrinal wrote in a video on Twitter, “My assembly constituency has been flooded. We are working to rescue people trapped in the floods.” Around the same time last year, large areas of India, Nepal, and Bangladesh were flooded. Millions of people became homeless. Hundreds of people were reported killed in the floods in India.
