The court on Monday has rejected the bail plea of Abul Basar, 57, a master of the ‘Mayur-2’ launch, in a case involving the death of 34 people in a launch sinking in the Buriganga River.
Sultan Naser, a lawyer of Abul Basar, appealed for the bail petition in the court (virtual court) of Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Moniruzzaman Sikder. On the other hand, state lawyer Anwarul Kabir Babul opposed bail. After hearing both the parties, the judge rejected the bail petition.
Earlier on July 12, a team of RAB-10 arrested Abul Basar from the South Keraniganj area. The court granted a three-day remand to him on July 14. After remand, the court ordered to send him to jail.
The ‘Morning Bird’ double-decker launch, which left Munshiganj at around 9:00 am on June 29, hit by the Chandpur-bound ‘Mayur-2’ launch just before landing at Sadarghat Kathpatti Ghat. The Morning Bird launch capsized immediately. The bodies of 34 people were recovered in the incident.
A case was filed against seven people with Dakkhin Keraniganj Police Station alleging negligence murder in the launch sinking.
