New gas field discovered in Sylhet

Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company (BAPEX) has discovered the 28th national gas field in Zakiganj upazila of Sylhet.

State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid made the announcement while addressing a seminar titled ‘Energy Security: Modern Context, Challenges and Way Forward’ on Monday (August 9).

In the virtual meeting, Nasrul Hamid said, a new gas field was found in Zakiganj. Gas can be extracted from the newfound field for the next 10-12 years.

BAPEX sources said, total recoverable gas reserves of this field is 68 billion cubic feet (BCF).

Earlier on June 15, BAPEX announced that a possible gas field was found in agricultural land in Anandapur village of Zakiganj. Later, a team of BAPEX went to Sylhet from Dhaka to check the issue on June 16.

Hydrocarbon Unit Director General ASM Manzurul Quader presented the main article in the program. Md Anisur Rahman, Senior Secretary, Energy, and Mineral Resources Division presided over the program where Wasika Ayesha Khan president of the parliamentary standing committee of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources.
