Fire strikes Banani’s building for 5th time, trade licences suspended

A six-storied building named Amecon in Banani’s Chairman Bari area was hit by fire around 9:00 am on Saturday (August 21), marking the 5th serious fire in the complex.The Dhaka North City Corporation has suspended licences of the business entities.

Dulal Mia, a worker in the building quoted, “We couple of workers were working in a part of a warehouse in 2nd floor of the building. We realized fire catches in the warehouse. Meanwhile, we found some smell of plastic burning and called fire service instantly.”

The worker also said that the fire incident in this building is not new at all. The fire hit the building for 5th time in the last 22 years. Of them, fire broke out here two times causing serious damage.

Earlier, the fire originated around 9:10 am, said Md Bazlur Rashid, deputy assistant director of the Fire Service and Civil Defence. 15 firefighting units were trying to douse the blaze till 1:30 pm.

In reply to a question, Asif Iqbal, a director of Amecon said, “Various kinds of gift items including wooden and plastic made crests were kept in our warehouse. Besides, several imported materials and chemicals are there. Using those, we make crest and gift items. These items are very combustible substances. Electrical short-circuit would be the reason behind the fire.”

On information, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam visited the spot.
