The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has started work to shut down the country’s unregistered online news portals on Tuesday, September 28 in the afternoon.
Apart from unregistered news portals, several registered news portals were also blocked on the day. Of course, they were reopened later. In this context, BTRC Vice Chairman Subrata Roy said that some of the registered news portals may have been shut down by mistake.
Confirming that the work of shutting down the unregistered news portal has started, the BTRC chairman said that the BTRC has started the work of shutting down the unauthorized sites on Tuesday after receiving the order of the High Court. This work should have been started earlier, said Karen BTRC chairman. Of course, he could not reveal the exact number of sites that have been shut down.
On September 14, the High Court ordered the closure of 926 registered online news portals in the country and all other portals within a week. At the end of the hearing of a writ petition, said Justice. Justice Mojibur Rahman Mia and The High Court bench comprising jastice Kamrul Hossain Mollah passed the order.
After receiving the order of the High Court, the BTRC applied for more time. At the end of the hearing of the High Court Justice Mojibur Rahman Mia and a virtual bench comprising Justice Kamrul Hossain Mollah gave BTRC two weeks. The High Court has fixed October 25 for the next hearing.
