The court has sentenced a man to death in a drug case in Khulna. In addition, five others have been fined and sentenced to different terms.
Khulna Senior District and Sessions Judge Mashiur Rahman Chowdhury handed down the verdict on Thursday afternoon. Six accused in the case were present when the verdict was announced.
Khulna Sessions Judge PP Enamul Haque said the accused Bikash Chandra Biswas was sentenced to death and fined Tk 100,000. Sohel Rana was sentenced to lifetime imprisonment and fined Tk 100,000, Chagir was sentenced to 15 years of penal servitude and fined TK 100,000 to two more years imprisonment for nonpayment and Bikash Chandra Mandal, Ershad and Fazlur Rahman Fakir were sentenced to 10 years penal servitudes and fined Tk 25,000 to one more year imprisonment for nonpayment.
It is learned that a team of RAB-7 Khulna conducted a raid at Moylapota junction of the city on August 11, 2017 at around 10 pm. When some people tried to escape at that time, a man named Sohel Rana was arrested and when asked why he escaped, he said he had cocaine. RAB officials recovered 230 grams of cocaine from him. The estimated value is two crore 30 lakhs taka.
Arifur Rahman Chagir, a cocaine dealer, was later arrested from a house on Gaganbabu Road on the basis of information provided by Sohel. According to Chagir, Bikash Chandra Mandal and Fazlur Rahman Fakir were arrested in a raid in Dakop Upazila. SM Ershad Ali and later Bikash Chandra Biswas of Rajapur area of Rupsha upazila were arrested in a raid in Tutpara and three packets of cocaine were found which weighs 2 kg 20 grams.The price of two and a quarter kg of cocaine is 22 crore 50 lakh taka.
Later, RAB officer Mohammad Rabiul Islam filed a case under the Narcotics Act in Rupsha Police Station mentioning the names of six people.
