A fire in a residential building in southern Taiwan’s Kaohsiung city killed 46 people and injured 41 others, the government said on Thursday.
The fire broke out early in the morning at the 40-year-old building in Kaohsiung’s Yancheng district and was extinguished at dawn, Reuters reports.
The Kaohsiung Fire Department said in a statement that they had confirmed 46 deaths after a search of the building was completed.
Mayor Chen Chimai said the building had been partially abandoned because it previously housed restaurants, karaoke rooms and a movie theater.
The government is investigating the genuine cause of the fire.
