Awami League has fired Gazipur City Mayor Jahangir Alam from his post of general secretary of Gazipur Metropolitan Awami League following his controversial comments about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
He has been removed from the initial membership post also. A legal action has also been directed against him.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the working committee of the Awami League on Friday. The meeting also declared AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation and president of Rajshahi Metropolitan Awami League, Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya Birbikram, central executive member of Awami League and Advocate Kamrul Islam as members of the party’s presidium.
According to party sources, the decision was taken against Mayor Jahangir for his controversial comments on Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Great Liberation War martyrs. Earlier, the Awami League had issued a show cause notice to Jahangir Alam and he also replied to the notice.
Besides, Mayor Jahangir Alam’s remarks on Bangabandhu and the Liberation War the meeting also discussed the recent violence in the Union Parishad elections.
