Councilor among two killed by gunmen in Cumilla

Cumilla City Corporation’s ward-17 councillor Syed Ahmed Sohel and his associate Haripada Saha were shot dead by unidentified men. At that time, four others were injured.

The incident took place at his Pathuriapara area office around 4:30 pm on Monday. Cumilla Kotwali Model Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Kamal Krishna confirmed the news.

Cumilla Medical College Hospital Director Mohiuddin confirmed the deaths of the two.

Sohel, also panel mayor of the city corporation, was taken to Cumilla Medical College Hospital in critical state with bullets wounds in the head where he was declared dead. His associate Haripad Das (45) also died in the incident.

Witnesses said four to five masked men entered the councillor’s office in Pathuriapara area in Cumilla city around 4pm and fired shots indiscriminately.

The councillor’s name came into discussion during last month’s communal violence in Cumilla city.

Md. Sohel was a member of Cumilla Metropolitan Awami League and President of Ward 17 Awami League. He was also the panel mayor of Cumilla City Corporation. His home is in Sujanagar area of ​​the city. He was elected councillor in 2012 and 2016. In his second term, he was also serving as panel mayor.

Farooque Ahmed, superintendent of police in Cumilla, said that so far they have come to know that the councillor was shot.

Cumilla Metropolitan Awami League general secretary Arfanul Haque Rifat said at least 10 bullets were fired at Sohel’s body. I had a meeting with him on Saturday. He was very popular to locals. We want a murder trial.
