A court in Dhaka has today deferred the verdict against 25 accused in the murder case of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahad to December 8.
Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 Judge Abu Zafar Md. Kamruzzaman’s court fixed the date on Sunday.
On the day, the accused were produced in the court under tight security. Apart from the three fugitives, the rest of the accused were present in the courtroom at the time of setting the new day. The verdict of the case was not pronounced as it was not ready.
Earlier, State Prosecutor (PP) Abu Abdullah Bhuiyan said he had appealed to the court seeking maximum punishment for the 25 accused in the case. Of the 60 witnesses from the prosecution, 48 were produced in court to prove the murder charges. After hearing the arguments of both parties on November 14, the court fixed the day (Sunday) for handing over the verdict.
Abrar’s father Barkat Ullah told various media outlets that he seeks the “death penalty as the maximum punishment” for all those involved in his son’s murder. “‘No one should be acquitted. An example should be set so that none should be the subject of torture,” he said.
Noted that Abrar Fahad, a second-year student of BUET, died after he was brutally beaten by some other students at Sher-e-Bangla hall of the university in the early hours of October 7, 2019.
Later, his father Barkatullah filed a murder case with Chawkbazar Police Station on October 7.
Inspector Md Wahiduzaman of the Detective Branch of police submitted the charge sheet of the case to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court of Dhaka against 25 Buet students on November 13, 2019.
On September 15 last year, the tribunal framed charges against the accused.
