Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque has said that emergency directives have been issued to tackle Omicron, a new Covid-19 variant discovered in Africa.
Maidul Islam, a senior information officer of the Ministry of Health, confirmed the matter on Saturday afternoon. He informs that the Health Minister said the country’s health ministry was aware of the new variant of Covid-19, called Omicron, which had recently spread to some European countries, including Africa, as a result, the ministry has taken some necessary steps. The Omicron variant is a bit more dangerous than other variants of the Covid-19, however, the country’s health ministry is working on it.
Health Minister said in a message, “Necessary steps have been taken to deal with the new variant of Covid-19. We are aware of the new African variant and the virus is highly contagious,” Zahid Maleque said in an audio message, urging people not to panic over the virus. “For this, our communication with Africa is now being suspended.”
He further said that screening has been directed to be intensified at all airports, land ports or all entrances in the country. At the same time, all DCs are being instructed to adhere to strict hygiene rules and wear face masks across the country.
Those who come from other affected parts of the world also need to be careful. The concerned branches have also been instructed to ensure that no person from the affected country can enter the country without screening in any way, the Health Minister added.
