A court in Noakhali has today sentenced 13 people to 10 years of imprisonment in a case filed over torturing a woman by stripping in Begumgankj of the upazila. At the same time, they have been fined Tk 50,000.
Noakhali Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 Judge Joynal Abedin handed over the verdict on Tuesday, confirmed court PP Mamunur Rashid Lavlu.
The 13 accused are – Nur Hossain Badol, Abdur Rahim, Abul Kalam, Israfil Hossain Mia, Main Uddin Saju, Samsuddin Sumon Contractor, Nur Hossain Russell, Anwar Hossain Sohug, Delwar Hossain Delu, Abdur Rob Chowdhury, Mostafizur Rahman, Jamal Uddin and Mizanur Rahman Tareq.
Among these, the four accused – Abdur Rob Chowdhury, Mostafizur Rahman, Jamal Uddin and Mizanur Rahman Tareq – are fugitives.
On the day, the rest of the accused were present in the court while handing over the verdict.
PP Mamunur Rashid Lavlu said the PBI has already filed a chargesheet in the court accusing 13 people in the case. Nine of the accused have been brought to court, however, four others were fugitives. The court has taken the testimony of 40 witnesses including the plaintiff in the case, he added.
Mostafizur Rahman, investigating officer of the case, said the local terrorist Delwar forces tried to rape a woman by tying her husband with a tree in Jayakrishnapur village of Eklashpur UP in Begumganj in 2020. Failing to rape her, they tortured the woman by stripping her naked.
The accused recorded the scene on their mobile phones. The injured woman fled to her sister’s house in the district sadar after recovering from the incident, Mostafizur Rahman also said.
Later, the accused demanded Tk 50,000 from the woman and offered intercourse with them. Reluctant to agree on thier demand, the accused “spread the recorded video” on social media. That video went viral on October 4, the investigating officer of the case added.
Police later rescued the woman after the incident. The victim filed three cases under the Rape, Torture and Pornography Act with Begumganj Model Police Station. Among the three cases, the court sentenced Delwar and Abul Kalam to life imprisonment on October 4 in a rape case.
