Voting for the fourth phase of the Union Parishad polls in 838 UPs is underway across the country on Sunday. The voting started at 8:00 am and will continue till 4:00pm without any break.
According to the Election Commission (EC), this time voting is taking place through Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) in 38 UPs while the rest of UPs are voting on ballot papers.
The Election Commission (EC) has already completed all the preparations before the vote. The Election Commission (EC) has instructed MPs and government beneficiaries not to take part in electioneering or election activities.
EC Secretary Humayun Kabir Khandaker said on Saturday that all our preparations have been completed. Law enforcement forces have been deployed. All presiding officers will arrive at the center by evening. The law and order situation will be good on election day. He expects a fair vote.
Voting was scheduled for December 23 in 840 UPs of the country. Due to the HSC exam, the polling date was postponed by three days to December 26.
Before the fourth round of voting, 295 people were elected unopposed in three posts. Of the uncontested candidates, 48 are in chairman posts, while 112 in reserved seats and 135 in member posts.
The movement of motorcycles from midnight last Friday (12 noon) to Monday 26 December has been banned ahead of the polls. The ban will not apply to journalists, election officials, law enforcement personnel and those engaged in emergency services.
According to the EC, 22 members of the law enforcement force will be in charge of voting at each polling station. In addition, a mobile force consisting of police, APBN, and Battalion Ansar has been deployed in each UP and three striking forces in each of the three UPs.
Some 3,814 chairman contestants are running in the 4th phase UP election, 9,513 women contestants (for reserved seats) and 30,106 member contestants in the polls. A total of, 1 crore 62 lakh 74 thousand 660 voters will exercise their voting right in 49,832 polling booths in 9,224 polling stations.
The EC has already completed the three-stage voting. The fifth phase polls to 707 UPs and the sixth phase polls to 219 UPs will be held on January 5 and 31 respectively.
